South Lake Union is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. There are so many things to do in this vibrant neighborhood, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our favorite things to do whether you’re visiting or living in South Lake Union, from exploring the local parks to indulging in some of the best food and drink the city has to offer.
1. Visit the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI)
The MOHAI is an interesting site to visit if you want to learn more about significant events in Seattle’s history, such as the Great Fire of 1889 that destroyed downtown and the Nisqually Earthquake in 2001. MOHAI is also home to the Bezos Center for Innovation, which is dedicated to exploring the role innovation plays in our region’s history.
2. Eat at waterfront restaurants
South Lake Union has some of the best waterfront restaurants in Seattle. From casual eateries to fine dining, there’s something for everyone. Some of the best restaurants include Daniel’s Broiler, The White Swan Public House, I Love Sushi on Lake Union, and Duke’s Seafood & Chowder. And with stunning views of Lake Union and the city skyline, you’re sure to enjoy your meal even more.
3. Explore Gas Works Park
Gas Works Park is a unique public park that was once an active gasification plant that produced gas from coal and oil. The plant operated from 1906 until 1956 when it was decommissioned. The park is located on the north shore of Lake Union and features a playground, picnic areas, and a climbing wall. Additionally, visitors can take in views of the city skyline and Lake Union.
4. Rent a kayak or paddleboard
Several companies offer kayak and paddleboard rentals, so you can get out on the water and get a sense of Lake Union living at your own pace. While on the water, take in the cityscape and the Space Needle, watch seaplanes land, and paddle past some houseboats or sailboats. And for the more adventurous, you can try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding.
5. Book a sight-seeing flight on a float plane
One of the best ways to see the sights is from the air, and the best way to do that is on a float plane. These planes take off and land on water, so you can get a bird’s-eye view of the city and its surrounding area.
6. Stroll along the waterfront walkway
The waterfront walkway along Lake Union is a great place to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the views. The walkway stretches for nearly three miles, so you can explore a large section of the waterfront at your own pace. For a shorter walk (about 1 mile), we recommend starting at Kenmore Air and walking over to Duke’s Seafood. This section has plenty of benches and lookout points.
